HISTORY

The School of Educational is one of the seven schools that constitute the Federal College of Education (Sp), Oyo. At the inception of Federal College of Education (Sp), Oyo in October, 1977, the School of Education was regarded as a Department of General

Education. Hence, both the Units of Psychology and Foundations were merged, and there were no clear cut divisions as we have today.

In 1983 academic year when course system was introduced, the Department of Educational Foundations was created in principle. However, the two Departments were still under the control of one Head of Department.

With explosion in the population of students and the introduction of a common final examination for the six Colleges affiliated to the University of Ibadan, there was a need to reorganize the School of Education into three Departments in 1986. Hence, the following Departments were put in place under independent Heads of Department.

  • Department of Educational Foundations
  • Department of Educational Psychology/Guidance and Counseling.
  • Department of Educational Technology and Curriculum Studies.

With the Establishment of the National Commission for College of Education by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1989 and the introduction of minimum standards for NCE teachers in 1990 by the NCCE, the School of Education was reorganized into five departments. These are, namely:

  • Department of Educational Foundations.
  • Department of Educational Psychology
  • Department of Educational Technology and Curriculum Studies (now Curriculum and Instruction).
  • Department of General Studies (GSE)
  • Department of Primary Education (PED)

In October 2011, two additional Departments were approved by the NCCE.

They are:

  • Adult and Non-Formal Education; and
  • Early Childhood Care and Education

Thereby making seven departments in all for the School.

However, there was a turn of event on Thursday, 14th January, 2016 when a new school named school of Early Childhood Care, Primary and Adult Education (ECPA) was carved out of the School of Education.

Resultantly, the present school of Education has four departments which are:

  • Department of Educational Foundations.
  • Department of Educational Psychology
  • Department of Educational Technology and Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Department of General Studies (GSE)

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the School of Education is a reflection of the Philosophy of General Education as stated in the minimum standards for NCE teachers (1990, P.2).

The School aims at producing teachers who are professionally trained, disciplined and intellectually sound for the attainment of the national goals stipulated in the National Policy on Education (1977) revised in 1981.
